Despite stiff competition from digital and satellite television channels offering blockbuster films and US sitcoms, it was traditional home-grown favourites such as EastEnders, Doctor Who and The Two Ronnies that the nation tuned in to watch on Christmas Day.
David Tennant's debut as the new Time Lord drew an audience of 9.4 million, putting BBC1's Doctor Who at No 2. A BBC spokesman said: "It was a wonderful climax to the year for Doctor Who."
